![]() If you use your mobile phone and internet to conduct business, you can deduct the portion reserved for business use. You can deduct a maximum of $1,500 for a 300 sq. The simplest way is to measure the square footage of your office space (no more than 300 square feet) and multiply the square footage by five-$5 per square foot. There are multiple ways to calculate your home office deduction. It doesn’t matter if you rent or own your home it qualifies as long as your home is your principal place of business. If you work from home as an independent contractor, and you have a space that you use exclusively for your business, you may qualify for the home office deduction. That means you could deduct $3,825 as your self-employment tax deduction. If you make $50,000 in self-employment income, your self-employment tax would amount to $7,650. Luckily, the IRS views this tax as a business expense, so you can deduct half of your self-employment tax from your net income. W2 employees, by contrast, have half of their Social Security and Medicare taxes covered by their employer. This 15.3% tax can be burdensome for a self-employed individual, as you have to pay the full amount yourself. The self-employment tax comprises both the Medicare and Social Security taxes. The following deductions are not intended as tax advice (everyone’s situation is unique and should be considered with the help of a tax expert), but hopefully they should give you a general idea of the deductions for which you may qualify. Still, if you keep close track of your business expenses, you can significantly reduce your taxable income and maximize your refund when April 15th rolls around. We all know that tax time can be brutal for the self-employed worker, as you don’t have an employer to share the tax burden. IRS restrictions apply for all items listed above. If you’re a gig worker, sole proprietor, or any other type of independent contractor, there are some tax deductions you need to know about. Please review and comply with IRS guidelines for items listed in this article. This can include new and used machinery, heavy equipment, furniture and fixtures, and certain vehicles, mainly SUVs and pickup trucks (over 6,000 pounds).ĭisclaimer: Please consult a tax professional for details and limitations. Vehicles and Equipment used in Business: Tax Code 179 allows businesses to write off up to $1 million worth of depreciable assets in the year that they are purchased.Retirement Plan Contributions: You can also deduct any contributions to self-employed retirement plans such as SEP-IRAs, SIMPLE IRAs, and solo 401(k)s.Advertising: If you pay for advertising on LinkedIn, Google or Facebook, you can deduct those expenses as well.Interest: Any interest paid on a business loan is tax deductible.Percentage of deduction depends on business use. The proposed transaction also needs to clear regulatory hurdles from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). However, management made it clear that the Splunk deal is not going to affect existing shareholder-value programs such as buybacks and dividend increases. For this reason, the prospects of a big acquisition might spook some investors. This all looks good, but there are a number of risks that investors should consider before loading up on Cisco stock. The combination of accelerating revenue, expanding margins, and cost savings are forecast to generate accretive cash flow in the first year following the close of the deal. This likely means that Cisco will employ head-count reductions and eliminate overlapping vendor costs in an effort to trim the combined expense profile. ![]() Management also alluded to the fact that the deal will carry meaningful synergies across go-to-market and product teams. This should be attractive for investors because bolstering its recurring subscription revenue should, in theory, lead to margin expansion. It believes Splunk can add $4 billion in annual recurring revenue to its existing business. Upon announcing its intent to acquire Splunk, Cisco published a presentation on its investor relations site that was filled with helpful takeaways. The strategic rationale makes sense at a high level, and Cisco's management provided investors with some important details around the transaction. Given the increasing demand for cybersecurity applications, Splunk appears to be an attractive target for Cisco as it looks to augment its own offerings. On the other hand, end-to-end security accounts for less than 10% of revenue and grew only 4% during the company's fiscal year, ended July 29. ![]() How can Splunk help Cisco?Īs it stands, almost 70% of Cisco's total revenue is concentrated in one category: secure, agile networks. Let's dig into the specifics of Cisco's proposed deal and see if now is a good opportunity to buy some shares before the deal is finalized. Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO) recently announced its intention to acquire cybersecurity firm Splunk (NASDAQ: SPLK) for $28 billion. While these transactions have garnered lots of attention, they represent only a small slice of the overall appetite of big tech. In recent months, however, investors have seen the likes of Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon invest billions into artificial intelligence start-ups like OpenAI and Anthropic. The last couple of years have been relatively quiet when it comes to high-profile mergers and acquisitions in the technology space. ![]() So, which one should you use and why? 6 key reasons why Time Doctor is better for teams than RescueTime It also has a free plan for individuals who need a basic time tracker. On May 27, the memorial commission of the Society of the Army of the Tennessee overruled the NSS judging committee and chose the Carl Rohl-Smith design. It was ranked almost dead last by the NSS committee. The submission by Carl Rohl-Smith did not make the short list. The committee narrowed the submissions down to a short list of four: Bartlett, Niehaus, Partridge, and Rhind. The National Sculpture Society (NSS) judging committee consisted of Daniel Chester French, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Olin Levi Warner and John Quincy Adams Ward. The submission by Carl Rohl-Smith generated the most popular acclaim. All the proposed memorials were exhibited in Washington, D.C., to large crowds. Mullgardt (a park with four columns), Charles Henry Niehaus (pedestal with exedra), Victor Olsa (pedestal with bas relief panels), William Ordway Partridge (equestrian statue), and J. These included Paul Wayland Bartlett ( plinth with deeply cut bas-relief of Sherman, War, and Study), Henry Jackson Ellicott and William Bruce Gray (an Ionic pedestal), Adrian Jones of New York (equestrian statue), Fernando Miranda (an elliptical Greek Revival temple), L. When the competition closed on December 31, 1894, 23 sculptors had submitted proposals. A committee of the National Sculpture Society agreed to judge the submissions. It specified an equestrian statue, and limited the competition to American artists (living at home or abroad). In 1895, the Sherman Memorial Commission issued a call for proposals. Congress was forced to double its contribution in order to make up the difference. However, the fund-raising appeal netted just $14,469.91. The society contacted its own members as well as those of other veterans groups such as the Grand Army of the Republic, Society of the Army of the Potomac, Society of the Army of the Ohio, Society of the Army of the Cumberland, and the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States. The Society of the Army of the Tennessee agreed to raise $50,000 (half the cost of the monument). The three commission members were the president of the Society of the Army of the Tennessee, the Secretary of War, and the Commander of the United States Army. On July 5, 1892, Congress enacted legislation establishing the Sherman Monument Commission. At the society's annual meeting in October 1891, the members of the society resolved to ask Congress to contribute $50,000 to a memorial and to establish a Sherman Memorial Commission. Within days, the Society of the Army of the Tennessee, a veterans' group for those who served in the Army of the Tennessee, began planning for a memorial to their late commander.
